🌿 Why We Celebrate Govardhan Pooja

The story of Govardhan Pooja dates back to the time of Lord Krishna in Vrindavan. Once, the people of Vrindavan prepared for a grand puja to please Lord Indra, the god of rain. However, Lord Krishna advised them to worship Govardhan Hill instead, as it provided them food, shelter, and resources for survival.

Angered by this, Indra unleashed torrential rains over Vrindavan. To protect his devotees, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger for seven days and nights, shielding everyone beneath it. Realizing his mistake, Indra apologized, and Krishna restored peace.

Hence, Govardhan Pooja is celebrated to honor Krishna’s divine protection, the power of nature, and the importance of gratitude.

🙏 Spiritual Significance of Govardhan Pooja

Govardhan Pooja teaches us the value of:

Faith in God over fear of deities.

Respect for nature and its resources.

Unity, humility, and compassion.

Simple living with gratitude.

The festival also emphasizes “Annadan” (food donation) as one of the highest forms of charity. On this day, devotees prepare a variety of vegetarian dishes and offer them to Lord Krishna as Annakut, meaning “mountain of food.”

---

🍛 What is Annakut?

“Annakut” literally means “a mountain of food.” On Govardhan Pooja, devotees prepare 108 or more types of dishes, including sweets, vegetables, snacks, fruits, and grains.

These offerings are arranged in a large heap symbolizing Govardhan Hill and presented before Lord Krishna as an act of devotion and gratitude. After the prayers, the food is distributed among devotees as Prasad.

Popular dishes offered include:

Kheer

Puri

Halwa

Gatte ki sabzi

Kadhi

Chappan Bhog (56 types of food offerings)
